Sutcliffe Gallery AustraliaFrank Meadow Sutcliffe

Gallery Five of the Work of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe of Whitby

A fifth splendid display of brilliant photography in the collection from Frank Sutcliffe.

Frank Sutcliffe's photographs represent a priceless slice of history which had not otherwise been well recorded, certainly not with this degree of sensitivity and accuracy. If you would like to share in this historic treasure trove, please note the catalogue numbers and proceed to the Order Page.

All prints are produced from the original glass plate negatives.

Note that the images shown on this site do not approach the incredible sharpness and quality of the final print available to you when you order these very collectable and historic prints.

Trees in a Misty Valley

'Trees in a Misty Valley'; Catalogue No.43:
This photograph gained an award when exhibited at Tokyo in 1893. A composition which under almost any other lighting and atmospheric conditions would be mundane, becomes a thing of beauty under the inluence of a 'sea fret' - a coastal fog frequently experienced on the North Sea coast.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Milk Donkey

'Milk Donkey'; Catalogue No44:
The donkey, 'Jane Trotter' is carrying two churns of milk slung over her back. It is reputed that she knew the milk round as well as her master, John Marwood, seen here standing behind her. He had a small-holding at Ewe Cote close to where the Sutcliffe family lived for a number of years.

Available in small (114 x 152mm)

Drinkings
'Drinkings'; Catalogue No.45:
Probably taken at Lealholm Hall Farm. A group of haymakers amongst whom are Alice Chambers, Tailor Bill Readman and Willie Wren. At first sight a group of people caught purely by chance, but on further study it is apparent that a considerable amount of effort and vision has gone into this composition.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).
